Bay State Refinishing & Remodeling has offered premier bathroom remodeling services to Boston area homeowners since 1999. Bathtub resurfacing is a cost-effective alternative to bathtub replacement with careful preparation. Our team has extensive experience in bathtub resurfacing, and they know how to make the process efficient and smooth.
Preparation required before our refinishers come to your property:
- All dust-creating work or construction must be postponed or canceled on the day of the appointment.
- All leaking faucets must be fixed before the appointment.
- Any loose or missing tile that we will be refinishing must be repaired before we come to your property.
- Make sure to remove shower curtains, soap, shampoo and any other loose personal items before your appointment.
- Any fixtures that we are refinishing are required to have plumbing, so that our technicians have access to running water.
- Any glass door enclosure should be removed prior to our arrival
- Tile refinishing jobs: any fixture that impedes access to the tiles should be removed prior to our arrival (vanity, pedestal sink, toilet, radiator, etc). This will allow us to do a higher quality job.
Here are the detailed steps of the refinishing process:
Removal of caulk
The first step is to remove the old bead of caulk from the perimeter of the fixture being refinished.
Sanding and Cleaning
Step two is to prepare the surface for superior adhesion by sanding and cleaning. Previously painted or glazed surfaces will require additional preparation for the new coating to adhere and be durable. If the previous coating is not completely adherent or it is incompatible with the new coating, then it will have to be completely removed by chemical stripping. Otherwise, the previous coating must be prepped by wet and dry mechanical sanding.
Surfaces next to the treated areas are taped and papered to mask them. Masking tape is known to pull up paint and wallpaper, so any damage caused by the removal of masking is the responsibility of the customer.
We use high quality exhaust units to completely remove residual odors and vapors from the room and surrounding area. People and pets sensitive to solvents or paint fumes should stay out of the immediate area for up to 24 hours.
Bonding agent is applied to bond the old surface with the new finish. This is an important step for acquiring super adhesion for all the surfaces we refinish, especially those made of tile and porcelain. We have used this process time and time again and it has proven to work for well over 15 years.
Two coats of primer and then three coats of acrylic urethane are applied with appropriate drying time between coats. The usual color we use is pure white. If you would like any colors to be used, it will require the mixing of pigments, so it may not be an exact match to what you’re looking for. Each manufacturer’s textures and colors vary, so the samples that we show you at the time of the bid should only be considered as a guide. However, we will try our best to get as close as we can to the samples that we show customers, but there may be variations in textures and colors when applied to surfaces. The maintenance and care instructions for your new surface will be provided to you by our technicians. You will be able to use your bathtub 24 – 48 hours after being refinished.
*Note: During the refinishing process, our technicians will remove the caulking that is around your bathtub before the process begins. It is important that you have the caulk replaced after minimum of: 24 hours (after the refinished surface hardens). You can contact Bay State Refinishing to get re caulking services (at extra charge), and we can even apply a non-skid surface at the bottom of your bathtub. This surface will help to prevent slipping, but please note that we are not liable for any accidents. (Caulking the same day and another advantages with our: “First Class Refinishing Package”
