Bathroom refinishing allows you to resurface old, outdated, or damaged bathtubs, showers, sinks, or tile. Refinishing is a less expensive and easier option than replacing the fixture itself and is just as durable and beautiful.
Bay State Refinishing & Remodeling has been helping Boston homeowners improve their bathrooms and homes since 1999. Our entire team has been trained in our unique method and are committed to making the process as smooth and easy for you as possible. Our end goal is always a fully satisfied homeowner. We want you to love your new bathroom!
Our 6-Step Refinishing Process
Our world-class refinishing process was built from our years of experiencing delivering the best refinished bathrooms in Boston. Learn about our process and see what should be done prior to your refinishing appointment.
1. Caulk Removal
Most of the existing beads of caulk from the perimeter of the fixture are removed prior to starting any refinishing work.
2. Sanding and Cleaning
Next, we’ll prepare the surface for the glazing by sanding and cleaning the fixture. Any surface that was previously refinished will need some additional work to strip the fixture of this coating, allowing the new glaze to adhere to the fixture.
3. Masking
Any surface areas next to the areas that’ll be refinished are carefully taped and prepared to ensure they’re covered during the process.
4. Ventilation
Throughout the reglazing process, we use a high-quality exhaust unit to keep the air in your home safe and remove residual odors and vapors. People and pets sensitive to solvents or paint fumes should stay out of the immediate area for up to 24 hours.
5. Bonding Process
A bonding agent is applied to the fixture to bond the new finish onto the prepared surface. This step is crucial for a durable adhesion when we refinish, especially when the fixture is made from tile and porcelain. Our bonding process has proven to be reliable and been our go-to method for over 15 years!
6. Glazing
Painting is the final step of the process and the one that adheres the new finish to your bathtub. Two coats of primer are used initially, and then three coats of acrylic urethane are applied. Drying time is required between coats. You’ll be able to use your bathtub 24–48 hours after the refinishing job is complete.
By request: At the end of the project, we’ll put any fixtures that were moved for refinishing back into place and reseal the fixture.
Coat Paint Color
Generally, the color we use for refinishing projects is pure white. We offer a variety of colors for paints, though please note that colors other than white require pigment mixing so may not be an exact match to what you’re looking for. Additionally, each manufacturer’s textures and colors vary, so samples shown at the time of the bid should only be used as a guide.
*Note: During the refinishing process, our technicians will remove the caulking that is around your bathtub before the process begins. It’s important that you have the caulk replaced after a minimum of 24 hours after the refinished surface hardens. You can contact Bay State Refinishing to get re-caulking services at an extra charge, and we can also apply a non-skid surface at the bottom of your bathtub. This surface will help to prevent slipping, but please note that we are not liable for any accidents.

Preparation Required Your Refinishing Appointment:
- If remodeling, all dust-creating work or construction must be postponed or canceled on the day of the appointment.
- All leaking faucets must be fixed.
- Any loose or missing tile that’ll be refinished must be repaired.
- Remove shower curtains, soap, shampoo, and any other lose personal items from the refinished area.
- Any fixtures that are being refinished are required to have plumbing so our technicians have access to running water.
- Any glass door enclosure should be removed.
- For tile refinishing jobs, any fixture that impedes access to the tiles should be removed such as a vanity, pedestal sink, toilet, radiator, or anything similar.
